Middle Tennessee routs Troy 81-53
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (AP)—Desmond Yates scored 27 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead Middle Tennessee to an 81-53 victory over Troy on Thursday night in the Sun Belt Conference opener for both teams.
Trailing 13-9 with 12:56 left in the first half, the Blue Raiders (4-3, 1-0) went on a 20-2 run to build a commanding lead.
The victory was Middle Tennessee’s fourth straight over Troy (3-6, 0-1), which was coming off a nine-day layoff.
Yates, the Sun Belt Preseason Player of the Year, was 13 of 18 from the floor for the Blue Raiders, who shot 47.8 percent (32 of 67). The Trojans made only 33.3 percent of their field goals (20 of 60).
Kevin Kanaskie added 11 points and seven assists for the Blue Raiders and Montarrio Haddock had 10 points.
Richard Delk was the only Troy player to score in double figures with 22 points and nine rebounds.
