George scores 17 in Fresno State win
FRESNO, Calif. (AP)—Paul George scored 17 points, including five 3-pointers, and Sylvester Seay added 15 as Fresno State defeated Cal State Bakersfield 66-51 on Wednesday night in a nonconference game.
The Bulldogs used a 14-0 scoring run to pull away in the second half, avenging a 65-64 loss to Bakersfield a year ago when the Roadrunners were in their first season at Division I.
Dwight O’Neil added nine points and five assists for Fresno State (4-4), which finished with a 20-6 edge in assists.
Trent Blakely scored 11 points for Bakersfield (3-6), and Terrence Johns added eight points off the bench.
After trailing by six points at halftime, the Roadrunners opened the second half with a Bryan Emanuel 3-pointer and a steal and dunk by Blakely to cut the deficit to 29-28.
But Fresno State responded with a 20-3 scoring run, highlighted by a 3-pointer by George and a two-handed tomahawk dunk through traffic by Brian Seals off an assist from Mychal Ladd that made the score 45-31 with 12:17 remaining.
The Bulldogs took a 23 point lead, 64-41, on O’Neil’s 3-pointer with 3:41 left before Bakersfield closed the gap in the final minutes.
The Roadrunners shot just 30.6 percent from the field and finished 6 of 25 from 3-point range. Fresno State shot 44.2 percent, including 9 of 24 from beyond the arc.
George, who has emerged as the Bulldogs’ leading scorer, hit 5 of 8 3-pointers after making 5 of 7 in Saturday’s victory over Pacific.
