VMI crushes Winthrop 92-74
LEXINGTON, Va. (AP)—Keith Gabriel scored a game-high 25 points to lead Virginia Military Institute to a 92-74 win over Winthrop in both teams’ Big South Conference opener Wednesday night.
The Keydets (5-2, 1-0) received 23 points from Austin Kenon and 21 from Travis Holmes.
Holmes also added seven rebounds, seven assists and four steals for VMI.
The Eagles (1-6, 0-1) were led in scoring by Justin Burton and Cameron Stanley with 18 points each. Charles Corbin chipped in 16 points and eight rebounds.
The Keydets shot 39 percent from 3-point range (16-for-41).
Winthrop outrebounded VMI 45-33, but turned the ball over 25 times.
