FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP)—Anthony Newell hit a basket at the buzzer Monday night, giving Ball State a 54-52 victory over IPFW.
The Mastodons (3-3) tied the game on a basket by Ben Botts with a minute to go and had a chance for the lead, but Deilvez Yearby missed with 23 seconds left. The Cardinals (4-2) then called a time out and set up the winning basket by Newell.
Laron Frazier led Ball State with 15 points, while Newell finished with 11 points and 13 rebounds. Trey McCorkle led IPFW with 15 points, while David Carson added 13 and Botts 12.
Ball State led 24-23 at halftime and IPFW led by as many as seven in the second half before a 10-1 run by the Cardinals. Neither team led by more than four after that.
It was IPFW’s second straight game decided in the final second. On Saturday, Carson scored with 0.7 seconds left for a 76-74 win over Eastern Illinois.
