Stingy defense helps Jackson St to 69-49 win

SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, Texas (AP)—Darrion Griffin scored 14 points and Grant Maxey added 13 to lead Jackson State to a 69-49 win over North Carolina Central on Saturday at the South Padre Island Invitational.

Jackson State (1-5) earned its first win of the season with stingy defense that limited the Eagles to 15-of-51 shooting from the field. In the first half, N.C. Central (0-6) shot just 19 percent from the floor and turned over the ball 13 times.

Jamar Briscoe was the leading scorer for the Eagles, finishing with 17 points on 5-for-21 shooting.

Jackson St. trailed by three points early before a 32-9 run that gave the Tigers control of the game.
