Mercer beats Chicago State 88-77
HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. (AP)—E.J. Kusnyer scored 18 points in a balanced attack Saturday as Mercer beat Chicago State 88-77 in the Chicago Invitational Challenge.
Daniel Emerson and Brian Mills 17 points each and James Florence 16 for Mercer (5-2), which built a 44-34 halftime lead and never led by less than five in the second half.
David Holton, Chicago State’s 5-foot-8 guard made 12-of-22 shots in scoring 31 points and also pulled in eight rebounds.
The Cougars pulled (3-3) within five twice in the second half but no closer. Mercer led by as many as 13, 38-25, in the first half as Kusnyer scored 16 of his 18 points heading into the locker room.
After Chicago State drew within 70-65 with 6:09 remaining in the game on a 3-pointer by Holston, Kusnyer sank two foul shots. John Cantrell’s free throw drew Chicago State within 72-66, but Daniel Emerson converted a three-point play and James Florence sank a 3-point shot to pad Mercer’s edge to 75-66.
Calvin Henry’s slam dunk culminated an 11-5 Mercer run with 2 1/2 minutes remaining to ice the victory.
Chicago State finished with a 1-3 record in the tournament while Mercer was 3-1.
