Emerson lifts Mercer to 71-68 win

HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. (AP)—Daniel Emerson converted a three-point play with 23 seconds remaining to put Mercer University ahead for good Friday in a 71-68 victory over Texas Southern at the Chicago Invitational Challenge.

Calvin Henry scored 20 points to lead Mercer (4-2), while Emerson had 13 and E.J. Kusnyer 17.

Emerson, a 6-foot-8 center, got fouled on a layup and made the free throw for a 69-66 lead, then hit two free throws with 4.6 seconds left after Texas Southern had pulled within 69-68 on Matthew Miller’s 16-foot jump shot.

Texas Southern turned the ball over trying for a game-tying 3-point shot following Emerson’s final two free throws.

Mercer trailed 66-62 after leading 51-39 midway through the second half, but Henry hit two free throws and a layup to tie the score with 1:06 remaining in the game.
