Portland spoils Davis’ home opener, winning 75-72
DAVIS, Calif. (AP)—Junior guard T.J. Campbell had 20 points, five rebounds and three steals to help Portland beat UC Davis 75-72 on Sunday, spoiling the Aggies’ home opener.
Jared Stohl added 17 points and grabbed four rebounds, and Nik Raivo scored 15 points and had four assists for the Portland Pilots (3-1).
Kyle Brucculeri had 17 points and three rebounds, and Joe Harden added 16 points and nine rebounds for the UC Davis Aggies (1-4).
The Pilots were behind 10-5 before a 15-5 run gave them a 20-15 lead with less than 10 minutes left in the first half.
The Aggies regained the lead on a 3-pointer by Brucculeri that made the score 25-24 with 4:39 to play. A 3-pointer by Stohl and a free throw by Ethan Niedermeyer gave the Pilots a 30-28 halftime lead.
The Pilots jumped out to a 15-1 run in third quarter, capped off by Robin Smeulder’s two-handed dunk, making the score 45-34 with 14:57 left in the second half.
The Pilots led by as many as 14 points, but the Aggies fought to cut Portland’s margin to 62-61 on a lay up by Mark Payne with 2:47 left.
Then Portland ended a two-minute scoring drought, and increased their lead 70-62 on two free throws by Nik Raivo with 54 seconds left to ensure victory.
