Valentine scores 28 in Eastern Washington win
CHENEY, Wash. (AP)—Benny Valentine scored 24 of his 28 points in the second half and Eastern Washington survived poor foul shooting to beat Texas Arlington 73-70 Saturday night.
Milan Stanojevic added 17 points and, Brandon Moore 16 points and 11 rebounds for the Eagles (2-1).
The Mavericks (2-1), led by Anthony Vereen’s 19 points and 12 rebounds, had a chance to tie the score at the end of the game, but Jeremy Smith’s buzzer-beating, 3-point attempt bounced around the rim before falling out.
The Eagles held a 72-67 lead after Valentine hit 1-of-2 from the free-throw line with 11.6 seconds left. Texas-Arlington’s Brandon Long answered with a long 3-pointer in front of two defenders to pull the Mavericks to within 72-70 with 6.7 seconds remaining.
Valentine was fouled again and again converted 1-of-2 to increase the Eagles’ lead to 73-70, setting up Smith’s game-tying attempt.
