MUNCIE, Ind. (AP)—Freshman center Jarrod Jones scored 19 points and blocked three shots and Ball State pulled away in the second half to a 67-55 victory over Southern Illinois-Edwardsville on Saturday
The Cardinals (2-1) got off to a 19-2 start in the first 11 minutes of the game, but the Cougars (1-4) fought back and took a 35-33 lead on a 3-pointer by John Edmison early in the second period. Anthony Newell hit one of two free throws to bring Ball State within 35-34, then a dunk by Jones put the Cardinals back in front for good.
A layup by Jones with 3 minutes remaining gave Ball State a 58-47 lead, and the Cougars came no closer than 9 the rest of the game.
Newell added 15 points and 13 rebounds. SIUE was led by Edmison and Aaron Garriott with 13 points each.
