Columbia topples Bryant
NEW YORK (AP)—Patrick Foley scored 20 points to lead Columbia to a 70-54 victory over Bryant in the first round of the Tyler Ugolyn-Columbia tournament Friday.
Columbia will face UMBC in Saturday night’s championship game.
Bryant (1-3) held the lead only once when Chris Birrell scored the game’s first basket to make it 2-0.
Foley then scored seven straight points, hitting a running hook, a fast-break layup and a 3-pointer to give Columbia (2-1) a 7-2 lead and the Lions were never threatened, leading by as many as 19 twice in the game’s closing minutes.
Cecil Gresham led the Bulldogs with 25 points.
K.J. Matsui added 10 points for the Lions who also had a 37-24 edge in rebounds against the undermanned Bulldogs, beginning their first season at Division I.
Tyler Ugolyn was a former Columbia basketball player who died at the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001.
