UC Riverside 61, Sacramento St. 49
RIVERSIDE, Calif. (AP)—UC Riverside’s Brandon Dowdy scored 14 points as the Highlanders beat Sacramento State 61-49 Tuesday night at the Student Rec Center.
Riverside (1-1) trailed only once at 2-0 and won despite allowing the Hornets (0-2) to shoot 54 percent from the field. But Sacramento turned the ball over 23 times leading to 22 Riverside points.
The Highlanders won the game despite being outshot (54 percent to 46 percent) and outrebounded (27 to 25). Riverside led 33-24 at halftime, but Sacramento opened the second half on a 11-4 run to close the gap to 37-35 with 14:42 remaining.
The Hornets again closed to within two points at 46-44 on a 3-pointer by Loren Leath with 8:15 to play, but the Highlanders responded and finished the game on a 15-5 run. Javon Borum scored 12 points and Aaron Scott added 10 points and seven rebounds for Riverside.
Leath led Sacramento with 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field. Donald Thomas added nine points and eight rebounds. Riverside improved to 6-2 in home openers as a Division I program.
