KALAMAZOO, Mich. (AP)—Shawntes Gary scored 16 points and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds, leading Western Michigan to a 71-58 victory over Detroit in its home opener Tuesday night.
David Kool also had 16 points for the Broncos (1-3), who broke a three-game losing streak but won their 11th consecutive home game dating back to last year.
Xavier Keeling and Donavan Foster led Detroit (0-2) with 12 points each. Keeling had a career-high nine rebounds for the Titans, who outrebounded the Broncos, 36-33.
Gary hit 10-of-12 free throws and Kool hit 9-of-11 as Western Michigan took advantage of 29 fouls called on Detroit. A seven-point run in the second half that gave Western Michigan a 55-47 lead was all scored on free throws.
While the Broncos converted 32-of-42 free throws, the Titans faltered at the free-throw line. They missed 7-of-13 free throws in the second half, including eight of their last nine.
