Utah State 61, UC Santa Barbara 59
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (AP)—A tip-in by Utah State’s Matt Formisano with three seconds remaining foiled a late UC Santa Barbara comeback in a 61-59 Aggie basketball victory Monday night.
Utah State, 2-0, led 59-50 on Jaxon Myaer’s three-pointer with 4:17 remaining. He scored 11 points, while the Aggies got 12 points and eight rebounds from Tai Wesley and 11 points and eight rebounds from Gary Wilkinson.
The Gauchos, 1-1, had tied the game with a nine-point run, with James Powell scoring the last five. His three-pointer with 32.7 seconds remaining tied the game at 59-all.
Powell and Chris Devine led UCSB with 14 points apiece.
Utah State outrebounded the Gauchos 36-25, which included 12 offensive rebounds. The Aggies’ 19-10 first-half margin on the backboards helped them build a 30-27 lead.
But UCSB, led by three steals apiece by Will Brew and D.J. Posley, forced the Aggies into 22 turnovers. Brew also led all players with five assists.
