Colgate defeats Cent. Connecticut St. 58-57
NEW BRITAIN, Conn. (AP)—Mike Venezia?s jumper at the buzzer gave Colgate a 58-57 win over Central Connecticut on Monday night.
Colgate (1-0) sliced a seven-point lead down to one with 2:52 to go. Central (0-2) got some breathing room as Joe Seymore and Aaron Hall scored for a 55-51 lead, but it didn’t last.
Venezia hit a foul line jumper with 47 seconds left and Ben Jonson made a free throw to make it 57-56. After Hall missed a free throw with 12 seconds left, Venezia hit the winner.
Willie Morse led Colgate with 12 points. Ken Horton had 18 points and 10 rebounds for the Blue Devils. Venezia finished with 10 points.
After Colgate led 33-28 at the break, Central Connecticut started the second half with an 8-0 run. The game became a defensive struggle from there.
Central took a seven-point lead with nine minutes left, but Colgate was back within two five minutes later.
