SIU-Edwardsville beats Western Michigan 83-72

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP)—Five players from Southern Illinois-Edwardsville scored in double figures in a 83-72 win over Western Michigan Sunday, giving the Cougars’ their first victory as a Division I school.

The Cougars overcame 27 points by Western Michigan’s David Kool for their lone win in the Charleston Classic in South Carolina, after two previous losses.

Aamir McCleary led the Cougars with 21 points.

Western Michigan made 10 of 23 3-point shots. But SIUE went 7-of-20 after making 1 of 7 in the first half. SIUE led 38-35 at halftime.

The Cougars previously played in Division II.

Despite three consecutive games of 20 points or more from Kool, Western Michigan finished the tournament 0-3.
