Josh Thornton’s 24 points sends Towson past Navy
TOWSON, Md. (AP)—Josh Thornton matched his career high with 24 points, Jarrel Smith added 18 and Towson opened its season with an 86-68 victory over Navy on Friday night.
Brian Morris had 10 points and eight assists, and Calvin Lee contributed 10 points and nine rebounds for the Tigers (1-0), who improved to 7-2 all-time against the Midshipmen (0-1).
Clif Colbert led Navy with 14 points. Kaleo Kina had 10 points and Adam Teague grabbed 13 rebounds for the Midshipmen.
With three players suspended for violating unspecified team rules— including senior forwards Junior Hairston and Tony Durant—Towson forced 13 first-half turnovers en route to a 37-27 halftime lead.
Thornton had 14 points, including four 3-pointers, during a 26-8 run that opened the second half. Towson led by as many as 29 after David Brewster sunk a pair of free-throws with 10:18 left.
