Saint Mary’s opens season with win
MORAGA, Calif. (AP)—Saint Mary’s Patrick Mills and Omar Samhan scored 15 points each to lead the team to an 86-55 win over Seattle Pacific Friday night.
Carlin Hughes added 11 points and seven assists for the Gaels in their season opener. Diamon Simpson had nine points and nine rebounds. Samhan grabbed eight rebounds and made seven of his eight shots from the floor in 15 minutes.
Casey Reed led Division II Seattle Pacific with 13 points. Jeff Downs added 11.
The Gaels, who had four starters from last season’s NCAA Tournament team return this year, controlled the game from the opening minutes with a 14-1 run. They put the game away before the end of the first half with a 20-0 spurt.
Mills scored seven points during the run. Fellow Australian Clint Steindl, who scored all eight of his points in the first half, hit back-to-back 3-pointers, as Saint Mary’s led 42-19 at halftime.
Mills dished out a game-high eight assists. He was the leading scorer this summer in Beijing on the Australian Olympic team. Mills averaged 14.6 points in six games, including a 20-point performance in a loss to Team USA in the quarterfinals.
The Gaels? largest lead was 40 points, 83-43, with 3:48 remaining in the game.
Seattle Pacific played its third exhibition game against Division I opponents in the past nine days. The Falcons were beaten soundly last week by California and Stanford.
