South Alabama defeats Alcorn St. 87-79
MOBILE, Ala. (AP)—Brandon Davis scored 21 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead South Alabama to an 87-79 win over Alcorn State on Friday night in the teams’ first meeting in 10 years.
It was the season opener for both teams, as DeAndre Coleman added 14 points and LaShun Watson and Bryan Sherrer chipped in 13 points apiece for the Jaguars.
Troy Jackson led all scorers with 24 points for the Braves, followed by Jarvis Williams with 15 and Anthony Ford with 12.
The Jaguars committed 19 turnovers but made up for the mistakes by outrebounding the Braves 48-26 and shooting 50.8 percent from the field.
Alcorn State cut the lead to 81-76 with 5:05 remaining in the game after Gifford Blakely made two free throws. The Jaguars outscored the Braves 6-3 down the stretch to preserve the victory.
