Hazel scores 23 as Seton Hall cruises in opener
NEWARK, N.J. (AP)—Jeremy Hazell paced a balanced scoring attack with 23 points and Robert Mitchell added 15, leading Seton Hall to an easy 88-61 victory over St. Francis (N.Y.) in the season opener for both teams.
It was the fifth straight win for the Pirates in the long-standing series, which dates to 1909. The Pirates now hold a 47-11 advantage in the series.
Hazell scored 12 of his 23 in the second half, while Mitchell, a transfer from Duquesne, had 11 of his points in the first half.
The Pirates also got a career-high 13 points from Mike Davis, 12 points and eight rebounds from John Garcia and 10 points and eight assists from Paul Gause.
Kayode Ayeni paced St. Francis with 19 points and grabbed 13 rebounds. Ayeni was the lone Terrier to reach double figures.
After the two teams traded the lead several times over the first 12 minutes, Seton Hall took the lead for good by going on a 12-0 run to take a 35-23 lead with 3:06 remaining in the half on a running jumper by Eugene Harvey.
The Pirates held a double-digit lead from that point on, taking a 42-28 lead into halftime.
