Belmont beats Samford 78-60
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP)—Andy Wicke had 14 points and five steals as Belmont defeated Samford 78-60 in the season opener for both teams Friday night.
The Bruins (1-0), who ended last season with a 71-70 loss to Duke in the opening round of last season’s NCAA Tournament, capitalized on Samford’s 24 turnovers. The Eagles’ guards committed 18 tunrovers alone.
Wicke, who had only two points in the first half, made three of his four field goal attempts for the game, including a pair of 3-pointers. He was also 6-for-6 from the free-throw line. Shane Dansby added 13 points and Keaton Belcher 11 for Belmont.
Trey Montgomery scored 11 points for the Eagles (0-1), while Josh Bedwell chipped in 10. Curtis West had six points and six rebounds for Samford.
