S. Illinois beats Massachusetts 80-73
CARBONDALE, Ill. (AP)—Carlton Fay scored 17 points to lead Southern Illinois to a 80-73 win over Massachusetts Wednesday to win the Carbondale regional of the Coaches vs. Cancer tournament.
Southern Illinois (2-0) advances to the tournament semifinals at Madison Square Garden.
Bryan Mullins added 16 points, Kevin Dillard had 14 points and Tony Boyle chipped in 12 points for the Salukis, who outscored UMass 26-13 off turnovers.
Ricky Harris led Massachusetts (1-1) with 24 points, including four 3-pointers. Chris Lowe had 17 points and Anthony Gurley added 15 points for UMass. Tony Gaffney had seven blocked shots.
UMass jumped to a 39-28 halftime lead, but the Salukis outshot UMass 60 percent to 45 percent in the second half.
Southern Illinois was 0-for-8 on 3-pointers before the break, but finished with nine from behind the arc, including four from Dillard.
