Maxey sends game into overtime, helps Jackson St. to 77-72 win
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP)—Grant Maxey had 23 points—including a basket that sent the game into overtime—to lead Jackson State to a 77-72 win over Alabama State in the semifinals of the Southwestern Athletic Conference tournament Friday night.
Jackson State (14-19) will face Mississippi Valley State in the final Saturday.
After trailing two points, 34-32, going into the intermission, Jackson State quickly took the lead on a layup by Jeremy Caldwell with 18:02 to go. The Tigers led by 11 points with 9:02 left to play. Then Alabama State (20-10) managed to whittle away the margin and tied the game just before the end of regulation.
The Hornets scored first in overtime, but the Tigers took the lead for good, 69-67, on a 3-pointer by Maxey.
Darrion Griffon had 21 points for Jackson State, and Garrison Johnson snagged nine rebounds.
Richard Lott led Alabama State with 14 points and eight rebounds. Andrew Hayles added 13 more and Brandon Gordon chipped in with 11.
