Morgan State defeats South Carolina State in MEAC tournament
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP)—Marquise Kately and Reggie Holmes each scored 19 points to lead top-seeded Morgan State to a 77-68 victory over South Carolina State in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament conference quarterfinals Wednesday night.
The Bears (21-9) advanced to a Friday semifinal game against the winner of Thursday’s game between Delaware State and North Carolina A&T.
Kately scored 17 points in the second half and Holmes added 16 in the final 20 minutes as Morgan State pushed a 27-26 halftime lead to as much as 13, 68-55, late in the game.
Morgan State did a great job on South Carolina State’s Jason Flagler, who scored 23 points in the Bulldogs’ opening round win against Bethune-Cookman on Tuesday. Flagler was held to just 2 points against the Bears.
Jamar Smith scored 15 points for Morgan State, which has won six in a row and 13 of its last 15 games.
Jessie Burton led South Carolina State (13-20) with 22 points. Jason Johnson scored 17 with 10 rebounds and Julius Carter added 10.
