UC Irvine beat Long Beach State 77-63 in Big West Conference
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP)—Darren Fells had 19 points and seven rebounds to lead UC Irvine past Long Beach State 77-63 in the first round of the Big West Conference tournament Wednesday night.
Guard Marcus McIntosh tied his career high with 16 points for the fifth-seeded Anteaters (16-15) while all-Big West first team selection Patrick Sanders finished with 18.
Irvine, which led by as many as 20 points, will now play fourth-seeded Pacific (21-9) in the second round on Thursday. The 49ers (6-25) end their season having lost their last eight games.
All-Big West first team selection Donovan Morris had 18 of his 25 points in the second half to lead the 49ers while all-Big West freshman Greg Plater scored 15 of his 17 points in the first half for Long Beach.
Long Beach made seven of its first 10 field goals and led by as many as eight twice in the opening five minutes before UC Irvine settled down. The Anteaters outscored the 49ers 18-3 in the final five minutes before the break for a 47-31 halftime lead.
McIntosh had 14 of his points in the opening 20 minutes as the Anteaters made a blistering 75 percent of its field goals. Irvine shot 58.8 percent from the field for the game and made 47.1 percent of its 3-pointers.
