Reed free throw lifts Austin Peay to 78-77 win over Tenn.-Martin
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP)—Drake Reed hit a free throw with 2.2 seconds left that lifted top-seeded Austin Peay to a 78-77 victory over No. 4 seed Tennessee-Martin on Friday night in the semifinals of the Ohio Valley Conference tournament.
The Skyhawks (17-16) tied the score at 77 on two free throws by OVC player of the year Lester Hudson with 30.4 seconds left. Austin Peay (23-10) responded by going inside to Reed, who was fouled and sank his game-winning free throw after missing the first one.
A desperation half-court heave by Marquis Weddle missed the mark, sending Austin Peay to its fifth tournament championship game appearance in six years.
Wes Channels led the Governors with 16 points, and Fernandez Lockett added 15 points and nine rebounds.
Hudson, the nation’s fourth-leading scorer, led Tennessee-Martin with 31 points, 22 of which came in the second half.
Austin Peay grabbed its largest lead of the game at 72-63 on a layup by Lockett with 5:33 remaining. Tennessee-Martin rallied behind Hudson, who scored his team’s final 10 points.
Austin Peay will play in Saturday’s championship game against the winner of Friday night’s other semifinal between Tennessee State and Murray State.
