Gardiner leads Sam Houston St. to win over Texas-San Antonio

HUNTSVILLE, Texas (AP)—John Gardiner scored a career-high 19 points, hitting all of his shots from the field and free-throw line, to lead Sam Houston State to a 68-37 win over Texas-San Antonio on Wednesday night.

Gardiner hit eight field goals and three free throws for the Bearkats (22-6, 10-5 Southland). Shamir McDaniel added 10 points.

Sam Houston State led from the start. Texas-San Antonio (13-15, 7-8) went more than nine minutes without a field goal in the first half. The Bearkats went on a 10-0 run during that time.

The Bearkats led 30-13 at the half and stretched the lead by 31 points in the second half.

Texas-San Antonio wasn’t able to get closer than 12 points.

Melvin Smith led the Roadrunners with 14 points and was the only one to score in the double digits for Texas-San Antonio. Kevin Spencer had 10 rebounds.
