Toney scores 19 to lead Houston to 73-68 victory
HOUSTON (AP)—Tafari Toney scored a career-high 19 points and Marcus Malone hit a key 3-pointer with 30 seconds left Wednesday night to give Houston a 73-68 victory over Central Florida.
Malone hit the 3-pointer from the corner after UCF (16-13, 9-6 Conference USA) cut the margin to 69-68 on a layup by Jermaine Taylor. DaShaun Williams hit a free throw for the final margin.
Lanny Smith scored 16 points and Robert McKiver had 15 for the Cougars (22-7, 11-4), who clinched the No. 3 seed in the Conference USA tournament.
Mike O’Donnell led UCF with 19 points, 15 of those off 3-pointers. Taylor added 16 and Dave Noel had 11.
Houston got 18 of its second-half points off free throws as the Knights committed 17 fouls.
The game was tied at 31 at the half.
