MVSU 69, Grambling St. 63
GRAMBLING, La. (AP)—Carl Lucas scored 21 points as Mississippi Valley State controlled the game from the beginning and held off Grambling State for a 69-63 Southwestern Athletic Conference win Monday night.
MVSU (13-15, 11-6 SWAC) built a 10-point halftime lead and held its ground in the second half to defeat the Tigers (7-16, 7-9).
Grambling moved ahead 17-16 after a free throw by Jared Riley at the 17:30 mark of the first period, but MVSU found its offensive stride and closed out the half ahead 32-22, outscoring Grambling 16-5 from that point.
Grambling State closed to within six in the second half, but MVSU continued to hold them off. With 45 second remaining, Grambling’s Anthony Williams hit a layup to draw them within four, 65-61. MVSU’s Stanford Speech answered with two free throws to seal the win.
Larry Cox added 14 points and eight rebounds for MVSU and Speech had 10.
Andre Ratliff scored 24 to lead Grambling, while Anthony Williams had 14.
