Wonge adds 10 as Winston-Salem beats Bethune-Cookman in OT, 76-71
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP)—Darrell Wonge scored half of Winston-Salem’s 10 points in the second overtime to lead the Rams to a 76-71 victory over Bethune-Cookman on Monday.
The win was the third for the Rams (12-16) in their last four games. Bethune-Cookman (11-19) lost for the fifth time in its last six games.
Wonge finished with 17 points to share Rams scoring honors with Darius Floyd. Jamal Durham added 14 points and Brian Fisher and Paul Davis had 11 apiece.
Dewayne Pettus paced Bethune-Cookman with 22 points, with Dominique Whatley scoring 13 and Jordan Carrier and Kevan Creppy getting 10 each.
Bethune-Cookman, which trailed by seven points twice during the first half, went on an 8-0 surge during the final 2:50 of the first period to settle for a 32-29 halftime edge.
The Wildcats moved ahead by eight, 57-49, on a Joey Woods three-pointer with 4:31 remaining in regulation. But the Rams, led by Wonge and Fisher, scored the final six points of the second half to make it 60-60 and force the first overtime.
Floyd’s four points in the first overtime, including a basket with 28 seconds left after Bethune-Cookman had followed Pettus to a 66-64 lead, forced the second overtime, 66-all.
Pettus’ two free throws with 3:22 showing in the second overtime gave Bethune-Cookman a 71-70 lead, but Winston-Salem scored the last six points to seal the win.
