Vereen scores 27 in UTA victory over Stephen F. Austin, 75-65
NACOGDOCHES, Texas (AP)—Anthony Vereen scored 27 points and pulled down 12 rebounds as Texas-Arlington beat Stephen F. Austin 75-65 on Saturday.
It was the first home loss this season for the Lumberjacks. The win assured Texas-Arlington a spot in the Southland Conference tournament.
Vereen was helped by 12 points each from Rod Epps and Rog’er Guignard. Guignard was 4-for-6 on 3-point shots.
The Lumberjacks were led by Josh Alexander’s 25 points. Gerald Fonzie and Benson Akpan added 12 points each. The loss ended an eight-game Lumberjacks winning streak.
The Mavericks (18-10, 7-8) trailed at halftime, 33-27, despite shooting 50 percent from the field. In the second half, the lead changed hands six times before the Mavericks went ahead for good on a Vereen tip-in with 6 minutes left. Texas-Arlington then went on a 11-2 run, highlighted by a layup and four free-throws from Vereen and a 3-pointer from Guignard, that put them up 68-58 with 1:15 left.
Texas-Arlington shot nearly 58 percent from the field in the second half to only 31 percent for Stephen F. Austin (23-4, 11-3 Southland). UTA had 10 offensive rebounds and scored 11 second-chance points in the final period.
