Eastern Illinois ends regular season with 64-61 win over Samford
CHARLESTON, Ill. (AP)—Byrne Jake scored 16 points and pulled down 11 rebounds as Eastern Illinois held off a late Samford rally to end the regular season with a 64-61 victory on Saturday night.
Eastern Illinois (7-22, 6-14 Ohio Valley Conference) trailed early as Samford (14-15, 10-10) built a 13-point in the first half.
But the Panthers fought back and tied the score 29-29 at the half.
They came back strong in the second, building a 50-42 lead with 7:49 left on a pair of free throws from Tyler Laser.
The Bulldogs tied the score three times over the final minutes, with the final tie coming on a 3-pointer by Travis Peterson with 1:24 left in the game.
EIU answered with an Ousmane Cisse lay-up with 1:02 left. Samford’s Josh Davis could only convert 1-of-2 from the free throw line with less than five seconds left and Eastern Illinois got the rebound. Jon’Tee Willhite made two free throws for the final score.
Willhite, Bobby Catchings and Gino Myers-Kyles all scored 10 points for the Panthers.
Davis led Samford with 17 points and Josh Bedwell added 12.
