Fells leads UC Irvine over Cal State Northridge, 82-66
IRVINE, Calif. (AP)—Darren Fells scored 19 points with nine rebounds and five assists to lead UC Irvine to an 82-66 victory over Big West Conference-leading Cal State Northridge on Saturday.
Michael Hunter had 18 points and Patrick Sanders scored eight of his 16 points in the second half as the Anteaters (14-14, 8-6) held off a second-half Northridge rally.
The Matadors (19-8, 11-3) went on a 13-2 run to pull within three points with 4:46 left. Hunter converted a four-point play and Sanders hit two jumpers in an 8-0 run to extend the lead.
Deon Tresvant scored 18 points and Tremaine Townsend added 11 points with 12 rebounds to lead Northridge.
Accurate shooting and strong defense helped Irvine build a 10-point lead going into halftime. The Anteaters made six of their first 10 shots from the field to open the game and went 15 for 26 in the first half, led by Fells? 12 points.
