Southern Utah beats Oakland 68-59 to win five of their last six
CEDAR CITY, Utah (AP)—Geoff Payne had 19 points and 13 rebounds to lead Southern Utah to a 68-59 victory over Oakland on Thursday.
Tyler Quinney scored 16 points for the Thunderbirds (10-18, 8-9 Summit), who have won five of their last six games. Orlando Griego added 10 points.
Johnathon Jones led the Golden Grizzlies (15-13, 10-7) with 23 points, while Erik Kangas scored 16 points, all in the second half.
Payne, the reigning Summit League player of the week, registered his sixth double-double of the season.
The Thunderbirds were outrebounded 38-28, but they committed seven turnovers while forcing 19.
Southern Utah, which shot 57 percent in the second half, never trailed.
The T-Birds biggest lead came on Payne’s free throw that made it 23-12 with 4:09 left in the first half.
Oakland cut the lead to 63-57 on Kangas 3-pointer with 1:01 remaining, but Southern Utah went 9-for-10 from the foul line in the final minute to clinch it.
