Sprink’s 32 leads Navy into tie for first
ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP)-Greg Sprink scored 34 points on Senior Night here Wednesday, leading Navy to a 83-68 victory over American University.
With the win, Navy (16-12, 9-4) moved into a tie for first-place with the Eagles in the Patriot League standings and swept the season series from the Eagles, giving them the tiebreaker for the regular-season crown.
A Navy win or American loss in the season finale Saturday would give the Mids their first Patriot League title since the 1999-2000 season.
American (17-11, 9-4) had a six-game winning streak which extended back to a 77-66 loss to Navy on January 30. Navy has won six in a row and 13 of its last 17 since a 3-8 start.
Sprink, a senior, hit for six 3-pointers as Navy set season highs with 15 three-pointers in 38 tries. Sprink was also 6 for 6 at the line as Navy made 18 of 22 for the game and scored its last 11 points of the game from the line.
Sprink went over 30 points for the sixth time in his career and fourth time this season, and became just the third Navy player in history to pass the 1,700-point milestone.
Kaleo Kina added 17 points and Chris Harris scored 13 for the Mids. Sprink and Harris had seven assists each. Navy had 18 assists and only 8 turnovers.
American’s Garrison Carr scored 17 of his team-high 20 points in the second half to lead the Eagles back from a 41-33 halftime.
Navy led 51-43 with 15 minutes to play, but went eight minutes without a basket and almost six minutes without a score as AU went on a 10-0 run that gave it its first lead of the game at 53-51, but a 3-pointer by Adam Teague broke the ice for Navy and tied the score at 58 with seven minutes to play.
A basket by Sprink and 3-pointer by Harris put the Mids ahead to stay, 63-58, with 5:19 to play. American scored twice to close to 63-62 with 4:09 left, but Navy outscored the Eagles 20-6 the rest of the way.
Travis Lay added 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Eagles, who outrebounded Navy 39-30. Derrick Mercer added 11 points.
