Smith scores 24 to lead Jacksonville 84-79 over Kennesaw State
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP)—Ben Smith scored a game-high 24 points for Jacksonville in a hard-fought 84-79 win over Kennesaw State on Saturday in Atlantic Sun Conference play.
Jacksonville led by as much as 20 points in the second half, but Kennesaw State cut the deficit to one in the final three minutes on a jumper by Shaun Stegall. A late surge by the Dolphins, who scored four straight, secured the win.
The game was tied at 40 at the half. In the first seven minutes of the second half, the Dolphins outscored Kennesaw 19-4, taking a 59-44 lead. A pair of free thows by Lehmon Colbert pushed the lead to 20.
The Owls cut the deficit to five on a 20-5 run, 71-66, with just over six minutes remaining. Ronell Wooten sparked the run with back-to-back 3-pointers.
Marcus Allen added 21 points and had 10 rebounds for the Dolphins (15-11, 11-3 Atlantic Sun Conference), Colbert scored points 14 and Ayron Hardy had 12.
Wooten scored 22 points for Kennesaw State (9-20, 6-10), as Stegall added 19 and had 13 rebounds, and Kelvin McConnell had 14 points.
