N. Dakota St. edges S. Dakota St. 63-60
BROOKINGS, S.D. (AP)—Brett Winkelman had 14 points and 14 rebounds to lead North Dakota State to a 63-60 win over South Dakota State Friday in a Summit League men’s basketball game.
Ben Woodside was 10-for-12 from the free throw line and scored a team-high 20 points for the Bison (14-13, 8-8), who swept both games from the Jackrabbits this season. Both Winkelman and Woodside made clutch free throws down the stretch.
NDSU shot just 29 percent from the field in the first half, yet still led 27-22 as SDSU shot even worse from the field. The Jackrabbits (8-19, 3-13) were just 6-for-28 in the first half for 21 percent and they finished the game at 29 percent.
SDSU kept it close by making free throws. Ben Beran was 11-for-11 from the line and had 20 points and nine rebounds.
The Jackrabbits were 24-for-28 from the line.
The Bison took the lead for good midway through the first half, but SDSU stayed on their heels the rest of the way. It cut the lead to one three times in the second half, the last time at 59-58 on a 3-pointer by Garrett Callahan with 30 seconds to play.
Woodside and Winkelman had two free throws each in the last 27 seconds to hold off the rally.
Kai Williams’ layup at the buzzer cut the deficit to three points. Williams had 14 points and Clint Sargent added 10 for SDSU.
