Brower’s 26 points lead UMass 98-91 over Rhode Island
SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (AP)—Etienne Brower scored 26 points and added eight rebounds as Massachusetts outlasted Rhode Island 98-91 on Thursday night.
The Minutemen (17-9, 6-6 Atlantic 10), also had double-digit scoring from Gary Forbes (23 points), Chris Lowe (21) and Ricky Harris (14) in their second win of the season against their border rivals.
Rhode Island (20-7, 6-6) got 25 points from Will Daniels.
UMass led by as many as 10 points in the opening half before the Rams fired off a 21-9 run to take a 41-39 advantage at the break. The game featured 17 lead changes. Rhode Island had 20 turnovers, while UMass had 14. The Rams outshot UMass from the floor, 55.4 percent to 48.4.
The Minutemen pulled ahead 87-86 on a jumper by Harris with 1:33 remaining to secure the win.
Rhode Island, off to its second-best start in program history, has lost three consecutive games and four of its last five.
