Jackson leads UTEP to 79-76 win over Marshall
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP)—Stefon Jackson hit the deciding shot with 13 seconds left to give UTEP a 79-76 road victory against Marshall on Wednesday.
Jackson, Conference USA’s leading scorer, tallied 18 of his game-high 28 points in the second half for UTEP to give the Miners their first conference road win of the season.
UTEP (15-9, 6-5 Conference USA) got 13 points from Marvin Kilgore and 10 from Randy Culpepper. The victory put the Miners a half-game ahead of Marshall in the conference standings.
Leading 76-75 with 25 seconds left in a back and forth game, Marshall could have helped seal the win with a pair of Darryl Merthie free throws, but he missed both shots. After a time-out, UTEP went to Jackson to hit a jumper in the lane for the go-ahead basket.
Victor Ramalho hit the final two free throws for UTEP, and Merthie missed a last ditch 3-point shot at the buzzer.
Marshall (14-11, 6-6) had five players in double digits with Tyler Wilkerson leading the way with 18 points and eight rebounds. Mark Dorris had 15 points and Robbie Jackson scored 12. Markel Humphrey and Tirrell Baines both finished with 10.
Marshall led at halftime 40-36.
