Cal State Northridge beats Long Beach State 82-78 in Big West
LONG BEACH, Calif. (AP)—Tremaine Townsend led Cal State Northridge with 18 points and 14 rebounds to guide the Matadors to a 82-78 win over Long Beach State Wednesday in a Big West Conference game
The win for Northridge (18-6, 10-2) keeps them in sole possession of first place in the Big West.
The Matadors lost key senior forward Calvin Chitwood seven minutes into the first half with a sprained right ankle. The extent of the injury is unknown.
Northridge had a comfortable lead most of the second half. The Matadors’ lead peaked at 66-51 with 8:57 to play.
Long Beach State, however, chipped away at the Matador margin and trailed only 68-61 after 49er Greg Plater hit a three-pointer with 5:42 to play.
Late in the second half Northridge got into serious foul trouble just as Long Beach State pulled to within 72-70 with 2:47 to play.
Donovan Morris led the 49ers in scoring with 23 points.
