Free throws seal 49-47 Illinois St. win at Evansville
EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP)—Dinma Odiakosa hit the go-ahead layup and Anthony Slack hit two free throws to seal the win, all in the final minute as Illinois State beat Evansville 49-47 Wednesday night in the Missouri Valley Conference.
Emmanuel Holloway and Boo Richardson scored 10 each to lead the Redbirds (19-8, 11-5 MVC) in a game that included six lead changes and seven ties, the last at 45-45 with 1:07 left,
Illinois State led 45-41 on a Richardson layup when Nate Garner tied the game and then put the Purple Aces on top with a pair of free throws. But Odiakosa’s layup with 43 seconds left gave the Redbirds, who shot just 29.8 percent but made 6-of-20 3-point shots, a 47-46 lead.
After a foul and a timeout, Slack hit a pair of free throws to give Illinois State a 49-46 edge. Evansville’s Shy Ely then hit one free throw but missed a second, making it 49-47. The Redbirds’ Osiris Eldridge missed a free throw in the final seconds.
Darin Granger scored 15 to lead Evansville (8-13, 3-13), which shot 41.9 percent. Garner had 10.
Illinois State had 15 points from free throws while Evansville had just eight.
