Newell has double-double as Ball St. beats Toledo 59-52
MUNCIE, Ind. (AP)—Anthony Newell had a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds as Ball State beat Toledo 59-52 Sunday in the Mid-American Conference.
Peyton Stovall scored 15 points and Melvin Goins added 14 for the Cardinals (5-19, 4-8 MAC), who outrebounded the Rockets 39-34.
Ball State shot just 20-of-52 from the field including 5-of-12 3-pointers. But the Cardinals held an edge at the free-throw line, where they were 14-of-20. Toledo (8-16, 5-7) had just seven points off free throws but went 9-of-22 from 3-point range and 18-of-54 from the field.
The Cardinals led 29-21 at the break.
Tyrone Kent led the Rockets with 18 points, and Jonathan Amos chipped in 10. Jerrah Young grabbed 10 rebounds.
Ball State outscored Toledo in the paint 26-16.
