Daniels hits 1,342 points as Texas A&M-Corpus Christi beats SE La
HAMMOND, La. (AP)—Chris Daniels scored a game-high 19 and became his school’s all-time top scorer as Texas A&M-Corpus Christi rebounded from a 16-point deficit to beat Southeastern Louisiana 62-56 on Saturday.
The Islanders (8-15, 5-5 Southland) trailed 28-19 at halftime but got the first nine points of the second half. Daniels overcame early foul trouble and scored 15 points in the second half, including the Islanders’ go-ahead 3-pointer with 2:47 left.
He passed Michael Hicks for the school’s all-time scoring lead before the first half was over, and finished with a 1,342 career total.
Southeastern opened the second half with five turnovers on its first eight possessions and did not score until Dekyron Nicks hit a pair of free throws that gave the Lions a 30-28 lead with 15:06 left.
The second half saw eight ties and seven lead changes. Southeastern led 50-49 after a pair of free throws by Patrick Sullivan, but Daniels gave the Islanders the lead for good with a 3-pointer from the left wing.
The Islanders made 10 free throws down the stretch, including two by Justin Reynolds with 8.9 seconds left that iced the game.
Warrell Span had 14 points for the Lions, Nicks 13 points and Sullivan 10.
Tim Green came off the bench to score 10 points for Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
