Pepperdine’s late rally stuns Portland 71-66
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP)—Rico Tucker scored 17 points, all of them in the second half, as Pepperdine overcame an 18-point second-half deficit to beat Portland 71-66 on Monday.
Pepperdine (8-17, 2-7 West Coast Conference) trailed 33-21 at the half and 51-33 with 9:17 left. The Waves then went on 17-1 run over the next 2:31, highlighted by five 3-pointers by four different players, to trim the deficit to 52-50.
Portland (8-17, 2-7) managed to extend its lead to 66-61 with 2:18 left, but Tucker completed the comeback with eight points during a 10-0 closing run.
The Waves hit 7-of-13 3-pointers in the second half and 12-of-29 for the game. Mike Hornbuckle, who had 16 points, finished 4-for-8 from behind the arc. Jon Reed also hit four 3-pointers, accounting for all 12 of his points.
Nik Raivio led Portland with 17 points and Robin Smeulders added 16.
Pepperdine shot 26 percent from the field in the first half and 58 percent in the second half. Portland outrebounded Pepperdine 39-24, but committed 23 turnovers, many of them coming against the Waves’ half-court trap.
