Douglas’ overtime 3 gives Elon 70-67 win over Wofford
SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP)—T.J. Douglas hit a 3-pointer with 3.9 seconds left in overtime to lead Elon to a 70-67 win over Wofford on Saturday night.
The Phoenix (8-15, 6-9 Southern Conference) needed a 3 from Brian Waters at the regulation buzzer to send the game into an extra period. The referees conferred for a few minutes before ruling the shot came from behind the arc.
Elon took the lead for good with 38 seconds left in overtime when Brett James hit a 3-pointer to take a 67-65 lead. The Terriers (14-10, 7-7) tied the game with two free throws by Drew Gibson with 26 seconds left, setting up Douglas’ winning shot. Wofford had a chance to tie, but Shane Nichols missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer.
The Terriers gave up a four-point lead in the final 10 seconds of regulation. Adam Constantine hit a jumper for Elon and Nichols made just one of two free throws before Walters made his tying 3.
James led all scorers with 25 points, making all five of his 3-pointers, while Constantine and Douglas each added 11 for Elon, who broke a six-game losing streak.
Nichols and Junior Salters each scored 14 points to lead Wofford, while Gibson added 12 points and 10 assists.
