Breeze’s foul shots give Coastal Carolina 50-49 win over Winthrop
CONWAY, S.C. (AP)—Anthony Breeze scored 15 points, including the winning free throws with 6.1 seconds left as Coastal Carolina beat Winthrop 50-49 on Wednesday night.
The Eagles (14-9, 5-3 Big South Conference) had a chance to win, but Michael Jenkins jumper was short and no one could pick up the rebound in time.
The Chanticleers (11-10, 4-4) trailed by 10 early in the second half, but went on a 16-6 run over about nine minutes to tie it at 35 with 11 minutes left. No one would lead by more than four points the rest of the way.
Jenkins, Antwon Harris and Byron Faison each scored eight points to lead the Eagles.
Logan Johnson scored 16 points and had eight rebounds to lead the Chanticleers.
The loss hobbles Winthrop’s chances of hosting its conference tournament games through the final. The Eagles are tied with High Point for second place and are 2 1/2 games behind UNC-Asheville for the top spot in the Big South.
First-year coach Randy Peeler’s team has lost three games in the Big South this season. The Eagles lost four league games total as they won the last three conference titles.
With the win, Coastal Carolina improves its chances to host a first-round tournament game. The Chanticleers are tied with Liberty for fourth place.
