Big overtime lifts Radford past VMI, 108-102
LEXINGTON, Va. (AP)—Alex Gynes and Amir Johnson scored six points each in overtime Tuesday night, leading Radford to a 108-102 victory against Virginia Military Institute., handing the Keydets their fifth straight loss.
The Highlanders (7-15, 2-5 Big South) got a 3-pointer from Kenny Thomas with 51 seconds left in regulation to tie it before each team missed potential winning shots.
The Keydets (10-11, 2-5), playing without injured Reggie Williams, one of the nation’s top scorers, got 29 points from Travis Holmes and 23 from Chavis Holmes, went behind for good on two free throws by Chris McEachin with 3:10 left in the overtime.
Radford led by as many as seven the rest of the way.
Martell McDuffy led Radford with 20 points, but did not score in the extra period. Thomas added 18, McEachin and Joey Lynch-Flohr 16 each and Gynes had 12.
Johnson finished with nine points, eight assists and three steals.
VMI lost despite forcing 30 turnovers and converting them into 40 points.
