West leads Hampton over Norfolk St. 62-58
NORFOLK, Va. (AP)—Rashad West scored 18 points to lead Hampton to a 62-58 win Saturday over Norfolk State.
The Pirates (12-7, 6-1 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) and the Spartans (9-10, 5-2) were tied at the half at 30 and the Hampton survived two ties in the second half.
Tony Murphy, who finished with 13 points, hit a 3-pointer to tie the game at 40 apiece at the 12:51 mark, but a Donte Harrison layup two minutes later put Hampton up 42-40. A jumper by West gave the Pirates their biggest lead of the night, 50-42, at 6:24 left in the game.
But Michael Deloach hit a jumper and two free throws and Tony Murphy added two free throws and a jumper at the 3:18 mark to tie the game at 50.
Michael Freeman hit a layup and a free throw to put Hampton up by three, then Michael Vincent hit a jumper to widen the lead to 55-50 with 2:09 left.
A 3-point shot by Raphael Hall pulled Norfolk State to 60-58 with 19 seconds left. Two free throws by Brandon Tunnel sealed the game.
Pilgrim had 10 rebounds and Vincent Simpson added 11 points for Hampton.
Deloach led Norfolk state with 17, and Murphy had 13.
