Hot free throw shooting helps UMBC hold off Vermont

BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP)—Ray Barbosa hit five straight free throws in the closing minutes to help Maryland-Baltimore County beat Vermont 75-73 Saturday in a battle for first place in America East.

Barbosa, who finished with 21 points, hit three of the foul shots with 1:24 left to put UMBC ahead to stay.

Jay Greene scored 26 points to lead UMBC (15-7, 7-2), which also beat Vermont at home 78-60 last month.

Marqus Blakely had 26 points and 14 rebounds for Vermont (11-10, 6-3) and Mike Trimboli added 15 points and seven assists.

Greene hit all five of his 3-point shots and Barbosa hit 4-of-6 as the Retrievers hit 9-of-14 3s.
