Fonzie, defense carry SFA past Texas-Arlington, 71-49
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP)—Gerald Fonzie scored 14 points and the nation’s best scoring defense held its seventh opponent under 50 points in Stephen F. Austin’s 71-49 victory against Texas-Arlington on Saturday.
The Lumberjacks (17-3, 5-2 Southland), allowing just 54.4 points per game coming in, limited the Mavericks to 27 percent shooting in the second half.
Texas-Arlington (14-6, 4-4) shot 52 percent in the first half but managed just 21 shots and scored just 25 points. The only scorer in double figures for the Mavericks was Jermaine Griffin with 10.
Fonzie was 4-of-6 from 3-point range but had some help, with Eric Bell going 3-of-5 from long range and finishing with 12 points. Josh Alexander had 11 points and a game-high seven rebounds.
The Lumberjacks led by three late in the first half when they went on a 9-2 run for a 35-25 halftime lead. SFA put the game away with a 23-3 second-half run that included back-to-back 3-pointers by Fonzie and ended with the Lumberjacks in front 62-34 with 7:29 remaining.
